The shocking truth about what the Sun does to your skin
With one simple trick, you can stop your skin visibly ageing by up to 90%!! Recent studies have shown that exposure to the sun is responsible for up to 90% of the visible changes attributed to ageing, resulting in premature wrinkles, bags, sags and uneven skin tone (hyperpigmentation). If you want to protect yourself from prematurely ageing skin, then a morning moisturiser with a built-in sun protection factor (SPF) is essential.
Sunlight contains damaging Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, that can penetrate multiple layers of the skin resulting in damage to epidermis (actinic keratosis), dermis (solar elastosis), blood vessels (telangiectasia), sebaceous glands (solar comedones) and melanocytes (brown patches). All of these add to and are associated with the appearance of an ageing face.
The proof
But where is the proof? One of the most interesting studies performed was on the effect of repeated UVA exposure of the skin through a glass window. It collected data from long distance lorry drivers who have substantial exposure of sunlight to the side of their face facing the window and light exposure to the other side.
Their skin was compared window side vs covered side, and the findings were conclusive (see the image below if you don’t believe me) there were considerable increases in wrinkles, skin laxity, skin roughness and skin hyperpigmentation.
The result is that repeated sun exposure prematurely aged the individuals face, as this can be almost entirely prevented by SPF cream its shocking that this data isn’t more widely available.
The first picture is of a lorry driver whose right side of his face is markedly more aged than the left side. The second image is made from taking the left unexposed side of his face and mirroring the image. The third image is formed by mirroring the damaged right side of his face.
It’s clear that the central image appears vastly younger than the third image, even though it is the same individual. A powerful testament to the damage that the sun can cause to unprotected skin.
So protect yourself today, make sure you use SPF, such as our Hydra Sun Defence and moisture daily regardless of the weather, as any amount of repeat exposure carries the risk of sun damage.
