Suction dentures – a tighter fit for dentures and no fixative
Are you struggling with unstable dentures and looking for a possible solution that does not involve surgery or fixatives? Denture Clinic Principal Steven Burchell Dip CDT RCS(Eng) GDC 108353, takes a look at the increasingly popular Ultra Suction Dentures solution.
There are around 11 million denture wearers in the UK, and it’s not just the elderly who require them.
Surprisingly, nearly a million people aged 16 to 44 have false teeth.
There will be many different reasons for adult tooth loss – the most prevailing being dental disease – but wearers will all likely have at some stage another common problem to overcome: Stabilisation – notably lower dentures that randomly move about and are hugely unpredictable.
If not addressed, displacement becomes progressively worse, and as the denture rises from the gum, food particles are trapped beneath, and sore spots quickly develop with the friction of movement.
Despite bucketfuls of fixative, in the words of one patient, “the dentures appear to take on a life of their own” and sufferers can’t eat what they want when they want.
It’s an all-too-familiar story that is repeated daily in my clinic.
Particularly for those without any teeth, gum profiles change over time and so does the denture fit as initial harmonious matches between gums and prosthetics are slowly compromised with bone and gum erosion.
Lifting, twisting and general movement of dentures is a sure indicator a new prescription is required.
False teeth are one of the most hard-working parts of the body, so it’s vital the dentures have a precise fit and are not prone to move.
Suction dentures
What every denture wearer seeks are secure, comfortable teeth that don’t embarrass while laughing, eating, talking and coughing – teeth that allow them to live spontaneously, teeth that look natural and teeth that enhance looks.
The dentists’ favoured choice for stabilisation correction is implants. Indeed they work excellently, and we place them every week at our Dudley clinic.
But not everyone is a suitable candidate, and neither are they the first preference of all patients.
Enter the non-invasive Ultra Suction Dentures solution that hit the UK market from New Zealand some four years ago.
Again not suitable for everyone, but for those with the right kind of gum contours, a great option to add another level of ‘stickability’.
Everyone with a denture should feel relaxed wearing them – there is no need at all to put up with ill-fitting and poorly functioning prosthetics that erode self-esteem and confidence. What’s more, the denture should look stunning.
The term ‘facelift dentures’ is banded around and it’s spurious. Dentures can, however, replace the natural supporting structures of faces and mouths, effectively lifting tissues and muscles into their correct anatomical place.
Pinched lips and sunken cheeks can take on a new profile, and in some cases, it can turn the clock back ten years on looks.
Secure, comfortable and natural-looking, Ultra Suction Solution dentures attract the most significant number of inquiries at the Denture Clinic.
So how do they work? A small diaphragm seals off a one-way valve under bite pressure, creating a ‘sucking’ vacuum between the denture and gums. The result is a better fit to the soft tissues and improved resistance to any dislodging forces created by eating and speaking.
The suction dentures device can be mounted in upper or lower dentures and because of its efficiency the size of the acrylic ‘plate’ on the upper can sometimes be reduced, improving speech and taste.
To achieve the best possible fit, Denture Clinic prescriptions are ‘set’ using a Biofunctional Prosthetics System (BPS) which helps accurately replicate natural teeth anatomy during the production process.
Typically, my patients will be assigned more than three-and-a-half hours of surgery time in achieving the best possible clinical outcome.
The Denture Clinic operates hand-in-glove with the North Street Dental that is based in the same North Street building.
Having everything under one roof – denture provision, our own laboratory, general dentistry and dental implant provision – gives us a huge option of solutions and a deep pool of clinical skills.
With a 3-D scanner, modern and air-conditioned surgeries and a creative team, I believe we are strongly placed to tackle most problems.
