Denture relines
Why reline dentures?
In the normal course of ageing, gums change shape, and the bone in our jaws begins to erode. Because of our DNA, some are more predisposed to the problem than others, though poor oral hygiene in earlier years is often the primary underlying cause.
As a denture wearer, it will mean that prosthetics that once fitted well will become loose and relining can be a cost-effective solution.
Denture relining restores the comfort and fit of your false teeth. Our regular annual or six-monthly recalls will help us to assess the fit of your dentures. During this appointment, we will check your suitability for denture relining.
If your dentures don’t fit correctly
Poor fitting dentures can lead to a variety of denture-related problems, not least, a tendency to repeatedly break.
Good fitting dentures help prevent food particles from becoming lodged beneath your dentures, from dislodging when you chew and also help slow the rate at which your jaw shrinks.
If you are experiencing problems with the comfort and stability of your dentures, it could well be worth considering having your dentures checked by the Denture Clinic staff. Our first consultations are complimentary – call us, and we’ll sort out an appointment.
‘Hard’ acrylic denture relines
The relining of dentures involves renewing the surface that fits against your gums. With a ‘hard’ reline this is done with an acrylic material and corrects the mismatch between the shape of your denture and the form of your mouth.
We take a dental impression of the surface of your mouth. The fitting surface of the existing denture is then replaced with the revised shape to match gums.
Relines can be carried out on both full and partial dentures.
Soft denture relines
As the name suggests, this procedure is carried out using a semi-permanent, soft relining material made of silicone. It effectively creates a thin cushion between the prosthetic and the gums. We attach the reline with a chemical bond to the hard acrylic base of your denture.
It is often used on uncomfortable lower dentures to provide extra comfort, or where lower dentures are painful to wear.
When are soft relines used?
Generally, we use soft relines when existing dentures have become loose. This looseness results in the delicate soft tissues in your mouth being at risk of damage.
A 48-hour service
The Denture Clinic, Dudley, offers a 48-hour turnaround for this service.
How long will a soft denture reline last?
Because of the soft nature of the material, we would expect soft relines to need replacing every two years and possibly much sooner.
Who can benefit from relines?
• Patients who have recently had an immediate dentures prescription
• Patients with denture stabilisation problems
• Patients who do not wish to replace their dentures with new ones
• Patients requiring a therapeutic reline before having new dentures
What is a therapeutic reline?
A therapeutic denture reline is used when a patient’s gums need time to heal, and the patient is awaiting a new prescription.
Often damage to the mouth can occur when dentures are old and do not fit harmoniously. We need a healthy mouth to prescribe new dentures. We need to address gums that are swollen and sore before we take an impression.
How long will it take?
Our Denture Clinic technicians generally offer a next day service on hard denture relines.
Are Internet reline kits safe to use?
We would strongly advise that attempting a DIY reline on dentures could damage both your mouth and the prosthetic. It is easy to alter the position and fit of your dentures if the relining strip is wrongly placed. There is no governing body regulation on this work. Please don’t go there.
